Ready to Grow: How Early Support Helps Children, Families and Communities Thrive

The Ripple Effect of Supporting Families Early in Life

Every child deserves a safe, healthy start. But helping children thrive begins long before their first day of kindergarten. It starts with supporting parents during pregnancy, strengthening families in a child’s earliest years and ensuring caregivers have the resources they need to build safe, nurturing environments where children can grow.

At Children’s Home Society of Florida, this work is at the heart of our Ready to Grow impact area.

Throughout Baby Safety Month, we’ve shared stories from families across Florida whose lives have been transformed through programs like Healthy Start and Early Head Start. While every family’s journey is unique, they all point to the same truth: when families receive support early, children have a greater opportunity to thrive.

For Riley, a first-time mother, that support began during pregnancy through Healthy Start. Through education, workshops and personalized guidance, she prepared for the arrival of her baby while building confidence in herself as a parent. Along the way, she discovered a passion for helping other families and eventually became a certified doula, turning her own experience into an opportunity to support others.

Her story demonstrates the ripple effect that can occur when families are empowered with the right resources at the right time. Support for one family can grow into support for an entire community.

Other families found encouragement and guidance through Healthy Start as they navigated the joys and challenges of welcoming a new baby. Parents shared how access to resources, developmental information and consistent support helped them feel more confident and better prepared to nurture their children’s growth. What may seem like small moments, checking developmental milestones, providing baby essentials, answering questions or simply offering encouragement, can have a lasting impact on a family’s future.

That same commitment to strengthening families is evident through Early Head Start. Families like Luka’s discovered how everyday moments can become opportunities for learning, development and connection. By helping parents become confident advocates and teachers for their children, these programs create strong foundations that support healthy development for years to come.

We’ve also seen the resilience of families facing extraordinary circumstances. One Healthy Start mother in Santa Rosa County navigated pregnancy complications, a serious health diagnosis and the demands of caring for her family while pursuing her education and career goals. With support from her Healthy Start team and her own determination, she continued moving forward, creating a brighter future for herself and her children.

These stories remind us that Ready to Grow is about more than child development. It’s about strengthening entire family systems. When parents feel supported, children are safer. When caregivers have access to resources and education, families become more stable. When families thrive, communities thrive alongside them.

This is why all of our Early Childhood programs matter. They help create safe beginnings, foster healthy development and equip families with the tools they need to succeed long after a family leaves one of our programs.

As we close Baby Safety Month, we celebrate not only the families whose stories we’ve shared, but the thousands of parents, caregivers and children across Florida who are building brighter futures every day. Their journeys are a powerful reminder that investing in families from the very beginning creates lasting change.

Through Ready to Grow, CHS is helping ensure more children have the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive from day one. Because every child deserves a strong start, and every family deserves the support to help make that possible.

Together, we’re helping children, families and communities stay Ready to Grow.
