Ready to Earn: Turning Opportunity into a Pathway for Success
From Eight Weeks of Experience to the Start of a Career
Sometimes, eight weeks can change the direction of a young person’s future.
For several young people in Children’s Home Society of Florida’s YouthWorks program, an eight-week work experience at American Magic’s High Performance Center in Pensacola became much more than an opportunity to learn new skills. After completing the experience, they were offered full-time positions as members of the American Magic team!
It is an accomplishment worth celebrating, but it also represents something bigger: what can happen when young people have access to the education, career preparation, encouragement and community connections they need to move confidently toward adulthood.
Creating pathways to long-term success
YouthWorks supports young people who have left high school or are at risk of dropping out, helping them continue their education, earn their GED and valuable industry certifications, access career development resources and gain real-world work experience.
But the goal extends beyond helping someone secure their next job.
It is about helping young people recognize their strengths, develop skills they can carry throughout their lives and build a pathway toward independence, stability and long-term success.
That mission came to life through this partnership with American Magic.
During their eight weeks at the High Performance Center in Pensacola, YouthWorks participants had the opportunity to learn alongside industry professionals while gaining hands-on experience in cutting-edge manufacturing roles. They developed new skills, demonstrated their abilities and showed what they could accomplish when given the opportunity.
By the end of their work experience, that opportunity had grown into something even greater: the beginning of a full-time career.
Ready to Earn in action
At CHS, we know that a young person’s journey does not begin when they enter the workforce. The experiences, opportunities and support they receive along the way can shape what comes next.
Through our Ready to Earn impact area, we help young people develop the skills, confidence, education and connections that can prepare them for adulthood and the workforce. For some young people, that means completing their education. For others, it may mean exploring career possibilities, earning credentials, developing professional skills or gaining their first meaningful workplace experience.
And often, it means several of those things working together.
Our statewide work recognizes that no two young people follow exactly the same path. By meeting them where they are and connecting them with the right support at the right time, CHS can help remove barriers and create opportunities that move young people forward.
The YouthWorks experience with American Magic is a powerful example of what that approach can look like in practice. These young people were not simply connected with employment. They received an opportunity to learn, contribute, build confidence and demonstrate their potential in a professional environment.
Strong communities are part of the solution
CHS cannot create these opportunities alone.
Partners like American Magic play an important role in building stronger pathways for young people by opening their workplaces, sharing their expertise and creating spaces where young people can learn from professionals while putting their own abilities into practice.
To the entire American Magic team, thank you. You did more than provide an eight-week work experience. You invested in local young people, shared your knowledge and opened a door that allowed them to demonstrate what they could accomplish.
That is the kind of community partnership that strengthens CHS’s work across Florida.
Our statewide mission calls us to build bridges to success for children and families. Sometimes, those bridges begin with educational support. Sometimes, they begin with a mentor, a career opportunity or an employer willing to give a young person a chance. What matters is that children, teens and families have meaningful opportunities to move forward.
Eight weeks was only the beginning
For these young people, completing YouthWorks and their experience with American Magic is an important milestone, but it is not the end of their story.
It is the beginning of what comes next.
They entered the High Performance Center ready to learn. Over eight weeks, they developed their skills, contributed alongside professionals and earned the opportunity to return not simply as program participants, but as full-time employees.
Their achievement is a reflection of their own hard work and determination, as well as what becomes possible when education, career preparation and meaningful community partnerships come together around a young person.
This is our cradle-to-career mission in action: meeting young people where they are, helping remove the barriers standing between them and their goals, and building connections that can lead to lasting opportunity.
To Greater Pensacola’s newest full-time professionals, congratulations. Your hard work brought you to this moment, and we cannot wait to see what you build next.
