As Father’s Day approaches, Children’s Home Society of Florida is proud to recognize the fathers who serve as volunteers, staff and board members throughout the state.

Fathers such as Steve Wernick, Board Advocacy Chair in the Southeastern Division, and Dale Jacobs, Board Chair in the Treasure Coast Division, strive each day to not only create a positive future for their own children, but for the children in their communities as well.

“Following the birth of my son in February 2014, I realized he is so fortunate to have two loving parents and a financial and emotional support system,” said Steve. “Not every child has that network of support. Through advocacy, I’m able to help children in foster care who are longing for a forever family and the same stable environment.”

As the father of two adopted children, Dale has a unique reason for giving back to his community’s most vulnerable children:

“As children of adoption, they’d experienced a sense of abandonment at a young age that sometimes never goes away,” said Dale. “As their father, I became committed to do everything I could to let them know I’d always be there for them, no matter what. They’re now grown and beginning families of their own and I couldn’t be more proud.”

Steve’s advice for fathers interested in giving back: “Look for an organization that meets your interests and is realistic to your schedule. Giving back to the community in a meaningful way through an organization that you are proud of can be extraordinarily fulfilling, gives you an opportunity to meet great people and expand your professional network, and, perhaps most importantly, sets a wonderful example for your children.”

“Fatherhood is a great privilege,” said Dale. “Helping our communities’ children is its natural extension.”
