Aaliyah and Amara’s family faced an unimaginable struggle when they found themselves without a place to call home. Their mother had worked tirelessly as a housekeeper until complications during her pregnancy forced her to leave her job. Their father, a dedicated retail store manager, shouldered the responsibility of providing for their needs. However, circumstances led the family into homelessness, leaving them in a state of uncertainty and instability.
Aaliyah and Amara, both students at Sabal Palm Elementary School, A Community Partnership School, faced the harsh realities of their situation. The absence of a stable home disrupted their education, causing them to miss 19 days of school. When the Family and Community Engagement Coordinator at Sabal Palm Elementary became aware of the hardships facing Aaliyah and Amara’s family they immediately jumped in to help.
Being a Community Partnership School means high-quality academics, health care, counseling, support, mentoring and more are available to children and families – all where they are most comfortable: in their own school. The Family and Community Engagement Coordinator worked diligently to connect the family with community resources to assist them with food and housing. Additionally, a compassionate volunteer stylist pampered Aaliyah and Amara, giving them new hair styles that not only boosted their self-esteem but also made them feel genuinely cared for.
Free from the constant upheaval of homelessness, Aaliyah and Amara were able to again thrive academically, attending school regularly and embracing the joy of learning. Their mother managed to regain her footing and secure a new job as a housekeeper, her determination unwavering as she sought to rebuild their lives. Additionally, the family received assistance in finding suitable childcare for Aaliyah and Amara’s younger siblings, ensuring their well-being and healthy development.
Aaliyah and Amara’s story is just one of many stories faced by families in your community. Through Community Partnership Schools we can make a lasting difference in the lives of children and families, ensuring that every child has a safe and nurturing environment in which to grow, thrive, and embrace their brightest future.
