It’s not hard to get into a summer routine of lazing around the house watching TV. But if your teen is spending every day like that, it can quickly turn into a lifestyle habit that can be difficult to break.

There are a few things you can try to keep your teen engaged this summer:

Exercise – A summer fitness plan helps teens set goals, keep focus and stay active. Encourage your teen to learn a new sport and ask to join in the fun. Not only will this help your child feel better, but it can make your bond stronger. Start the conversation and see what peaks your teen’s interest – It could be tennis, swimming or dance lessons.

Learn Something New – Even though its summer, your child never stops learning. Teens can benefit greatly by keeping their hands and minds busy with new activities. Your teen could try journaling or learning to cook. By trying out a few new recipes at the start of the summer, your child could be whipping up a full family meal come August.

Volunteer – Following your child’s interests, encourage them to volunteer. Volunteer opportunities instill a sense of purpose and increase self-esteem in teens. They will learn responsibility and build their job skills and resume. Some organizations even offer teen internships which can turn into paid positions.

Help your teen find what fits them. Activities that are too difficult or do not match your child’s interest will just frustrate them.
