As shared by Laura
Nearly 20 years ago, I married the love of my life … though we were both young, we were ready to take on the world! For a few years, we relished in being newlyweds but, as we neared our 30s, we began trying to grow our family, eager to share our love with a child.
It didn’t happen as we planned, but I wouldn’t change a thing…
In less than two years, we lost three pregnancies. We so desperately wanted to be parents, and we knew we could just as easily love a child who grew in our hearts rather than in my belly. Adoption was the natural choice for us.
I still remember when we were selected by Abigail’s birth mother to be her parents; the love I felt for this little baby was instant, and our lives changed forever – suddenly, we were a family. Abigail is such a delight! She’s smart, feisty and artistic, and she keeps us on our toes. We wouldn’t have it any other way!
After Abigail, we couldn’t wait to bring our second daughter home! She, too, has brought so much joy into our lives. She and Allan also share a special bond; when Isabella was just a baby, she had major surgery and spent lots of time recovering in the hospital. We sat with her around the clock, and Isabella wouldn’t leave her daddy’s arms. For days, Allan sat in the hospital recliner holding and consoling her. We are so thankful she recovered fully – she is such a bright light in our home! Isabella has the most energy of all our “baby ladies,” a tender heart and quick temper, and she loves to dance and sing.
We thought our family was complete …
Until the phone rang again. Isabella’s birth mother had another baby … within days, Laura Sophia was in our arms.
Now we have three beautiful girls and our focus isn’t on the “things” in life, but rather on our daughters. We certainly aren’t wealthy, and we don’t have the biggest house or the newest toys. But we have our family – our precious children and each other. We so often hear, “Your girls are so lucky to have you two.” The truth is, though, we’re the lucky ones. We need our daughters just as much as they need us.
